If we do the game and work ethics into it, what if we made permanent consoles for the Bronco? You know, like those games they have in bars... That would encourage thought with our peers...might actually get used too.

If we somehow work ethics into our Senior Design project, we could make $5,000 each. Not sure how it would work, but it would be a neat blending of my (yours?) two interests (engineering and phil), plus we're both minoring, etc. The only problem is that I can't think of any way to add it in that won't seem forced.

Also, Figueira said to look into this: CREU. She also said she would love to be our advisor if we don't have one already. I know we are thinking about going with Noll, but just so we know that there is more than one choice or whatever. (Personally, I prefer Noll, but I'm just saying)

So, after seeing Battle Royale, I got reminded of a conversation I had with someone of what I would do if I had the license to make a game out of a TV show (namely, Survivor). I said I'd make it the real fucking Survivor.

You interested?

Basically, it can be anywhere from 10 to 30-odd players (or CPUs), and you run around on an island, and there are scattered weapons, and the point is to, well, survive. Once you die, the game is over. Once everybody else is dead and you're not, you win.

There's a lot of detailwork I hashed out here (with four huge accidents on the road, it was a long. ass. drive), but if you're not interested in this even, then there's no point in pontificating.

I'm working on coming up with more ideas. That's just something to throw out there.

Life is unfortunate, because my creative strength (and I use 'strength' relatively here - it's like saying my cooking stregth is making toast) is in story and character development, both of which work well in RPGs, and I hate RPGs. Nuts.

Samurai names:

Family, Middle, Given

Middle name is (for low-ranking samurai) a nickname or (for high-ranking samurai) a job title.  It is optional

Types of names:
Childhood - whatever the parents want
First Adult name - given at the age of 14, one character from father or grandfather's name, one other
          The other based on meaning and then later changed (only if high-ranking) to be given by the shogun (part of his name).
Religious name - most Samurai become buddhist monks at some point in their life
          Ex. :  Kenshin, Soteki, Shonyu, Sozen, Dokan, etc.
Job Title name - Either states his title or the lands over which he rules
Death name - name given after death, may mark his deification, used when honoring him as an ancestor

Just to record conversations today:


You are a samurai (name tba), who is sworn to a master who is becoming more and more questionable. Eventually, he does something that you just cannot stand. It is so bad that you reject the code of the samurai and embark on a journey to defeat your master.

What your master did is so bad that for the good of the world you need to defeat him, Then, at the end, you kill yourself for the inexcusable crime of murdering the man you were sworn to protect.

Because you are gone, your master hires ninjas to hunt you down and kill you. You must defeat these ninjas and make it back to kill your master. Code of the ninja will also enter in somehow.

I also kinda want to insert Chinese Shaolin monks in there somewhere...I WILL FIND A WAY!


No real face on the sprites, it's pretty hard. Probably eyes on the ninjas though. But right before they fight...*flash* NINJA! *flash* SAMURAI *flash* FIGHT! and then battle. This will most likely only be for mini-bosses. Main bosses may get their own "FMV's" to move the storyline forward.

No sappy love story. No "I'm on a neverending quest to save my girlfriend!"

I got a little bored and a little antsy.

What do you think? I mean, it's my first sprite, you know, ever, so I'm hoping that with time I'll get better at it. But that's a basic shape for now. Like it? Hate it? Think things about it should change?

Oh, and I know it has no face. That's because when I tried adding a face, it turned out CRAP. So I gave up.

Heh. It doesn't take much to get me writing. As I'm sure you've noticed by now.

Anyway, I think we should note for posterity that our main decision-making tool is rock paper scissors. That is how we decided to do a platformer. We started off thinking something with a scary-esque theme - think Castlevania - but eventually it became ninja and samurai. I suppose that's how the world works.

I'm also going to comment on my utter fear of sprite programming. Pages upon pages of hex can really put the fear of God in you.

Anyway, back to COEN 174 - I'm having issues with sscanf(). Kristen, if you have any working knowledge of sscanf() let me know.

I've actually been reading these posts and trying to figure out what to say. Before the community existed, there were lots of things I wanted to write. But now that we have this tool, I'm at a loss.

So this post is the "ice breaker." Hopefully the ideas will come to me now that I've posted once.

I also feel like I need a special icon for this.... hmm..... I'll have to think one up.

This looks ridiculously useful. Not sure yet, as I'm sort of in lab (a pox on software programming! pox) but we'll see. What caught me was the quote in /..

"Stuck for ideas about cheapest/fastest/most realistic rendering technology for that new video game you want to develop?"
